REVIEWS
Drummer, percussionist, group leader and sometime keyboardist Pat O'Donnell presents a program of original
compositions on For My Friends. It's an enjoyable set, and the compositions are creative and interesting with
pleasing melodies and interesting harmonies. It's hard to find fault with anything here.On O'Donnell's tribute to
Richard Tee, "Tee Time", he handles piano, organ, drums and percussion here and shows a good appreciation for
Tee's unique and recognizable style. On three cuts, Bob Mintzer is enlisted to provide some name recognition and
fire power to the album. For My Friends provides good evidence of Pat O'Donnell's multiple talents, and establishes
him as a talent to keep your eyes and ears on.

Pat O'Donnell's new CD showcases a promising new drummer/composer. The tunes are well thought out and
constructed...incorporating a more aggressive, edgy approach to rhythm. Mr. O'Donnell's drumming is more
complex than the usual light jazz fare and special guest Bob Mintzer's always intriguing sax work lends an aura of
respectability and class to the whole affair. The music is sinuous and melodic, forcing the listener to sit up and pay
more attention than would otherwise be necessary in other examples of this genre. Thoughtfully recommended.

This funk/jazz recording features the work of drummer/leader Pat O'Donnell and his New York based ensemble.
Making extensive use of melodic "hooks", a strong backbeat groove and excellent musicianship on the part of the
entire group, the recording features the composing talents of its leader and might best be compared with the work
of the Los Angeles-based Yellowjackets,Rippingtons or David Benoit... Saxophonist Bob Mintzer (who currently
works with the Yellowjackets) guests on three tracks and lends his unmistakable sound and energy to the solo
sections. Ed Greig and Lee Musiker provide great keyboard/piano solos and accompaniment. Takashi Otsuka holds
the band together on bass and O'Donnell contributes his talents not only on drums and percussion but also does
some keyboard programming. The entire CD contains somewhat of a gospel feel to it-particularly on the tunes For
My Friends, Tee Time and Welcome Home.
